The Blessing of a Cool Breeze

The last couple of days, we’ve had a break from the normal high humidity levels here in western North Carolina. Usually, starting in June, the humidity gets so high and uncomfortable that we have a saying for it here in the South—we call it “the air you wear.”

Most days, by the time the temperatures climb into the mid-80s, stepping outside feels like walking into a tropical jungle. Anything we need to do outdoors—yardwork, watering flowers, or walking the dogs—has to be done early in the morning or later in the evening to make it bearable. Today, though, was different.

It was after lunch when I took the dogs for a walk, and it felt absolutely wonderful. The temperature had reached 82 degrees, but with the lower humidity and a gentle breeze, it felt more like the mid-70s. The dogs were happy. I was happy. Everything just seemed lighter.

As I walked, I couldn’t help but think about how quickly we adapt to difficult conditions. After weeks of sticky, muggy weather, I had almost forgotten how refreshing a simple breeze could feel. When the humidity finally lifted, I appreciated it in a way I probably wouldn’t have if every day was like this.

Life can be a lot like that. Sometimes we’re carrying burdens, worries, disappointments, or struggles for so long that we don’t even realize how heavy they’ve become. We learn to function under the weight of them.

Then God gives us a moment of relief—a prayer answered (that happened twice this week), an encouraging conversation, an unexpected blessing, or simply a deep sense of His presence—and suddenly we remember what it feels like to breathe a little easier.

Those moments remind us that God never intended for us to carry every burden alone.

Jesus said, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” What a beautiful invitation. Not a promise that life will always be easy, but a promise that we don’t have to walk through it by ourselves.

Today, a cool breeze and lower humidity reminded me to be thankful for the simple gifts God provides. Sometimes His blessings come in big, life-changing ways. Other times, they arrive as a pleasant afternoon walk, a happy dog, and a reminder to look up and enjoy the day He has made.

I hope wherever you are today, you find a moment to pause, take a deep breath, and thank God for the blessings that surround you—both big and small.
