You Never Really Know

This week, the news and social media have been flooded with the heartbreaking news of the death of 36-year-old actress Hayden Panettiere.
I remember her as a child actress in Remember the Titans and later from Heroes, a show my daughter used to watch back in the 2000s.Such talent. Such beauty. Such sadness.
To those of us looking from the outside in, she seemed to have so much. She was beautiful, talented, famous, successful, and had opportunities most people could only dream about. But that’s the thing about looking from the outside. We never really know.
We see someone’s house, but we don’t know what happens behind the front door.
We see the family photograph, but we don’t know what happened five minutes before it was taken.
We see the smiling Facebook post, but we don’t know about the tears that may have come later.
We see the successful career, the beautiful face, the vacations, the accomplishments, and all the things that make someone’s life appear wonderful. But we don’t see the whole story.
And that isn’t just true of celebrities. It’s true of the woman standing in front of us at the grocery store. The neighbor who waves as she drives by. The coworker who always seems to have everything together. The person sitting beside us at church.
Sometimes even the people closest to us are carrying things we know nothing about.
Hayden had spoken publicly about some of the difficult seasons in her own life, but only the people closest to her could possibly know the full weight of what she carried. Her death has reminded me of something I’ve thought about many times over the years:
Be kind. You never really know what someone is going through. A kind word might seem insignificant to us, but it may land on a day when someone desperately needs one.
A phone call that takes five minutes might mean everything to someone who has been feeling forgotten.
A little patience with the cashier who seems distracted, the driver who isn’t moving fast enough, or the person who doesn’t respond the way we think they should might be grace extended at exactly the right moment. We simply don’t know.
Scripture reminds us in 1 Samuel 16:7 that while people look at outward appearances, God looks at the heart.
He sees what we can’t. He sees the worry hidden behind the smile. He sees the grief no one talks about. He sees the loneliness in a crowded room. He sees the person who looks completely put together on the outside but is struggling on the inside. And maybe knowing that should change the way we look at each other.
Instead of assuming, perhaps we can give a little more grace. Instead of judging, perhaps we can be curious enough to care. Instead of thinking, They have everything—what could they possibly be unhappy about? Perhaps we can remember that money, beauty, success, and recognition can’t protect a human heart from pain.
I don’t know what the person I pass today may be carrying. Neither do you. But God does. So perhaps our prayer shouldn’t only be, “Lord, help me through what I’m facing today.”
Maybe sometimes it should also be, “Lord, help me notice the people around me. Make me gentle with the things I cannot see. And if someone needs a little bit of Your love today, please let some of it come through me.”
Because we never really know. And sometimes the smallest kindness can reach much deeper than we ever realize.
