Difference between smoothies and nice cream?

There seems to be some confusion about different terminology with blended frozen desserts. Some are called Nice Cream and others are called Smoothies.

Nice Cream is the basic concept of blending frozen fruit in a blender or food processor until it has the exact texture of soft-serve ice cream.

It is just as delicious as ice cream without the need for added sugar or a complicated ice cream maker. A great nice cream recipe to try is Mango Lime Nice Cream.

Though I have owned an electric ice cream maker for years, it is still in the box and has never been opened.

Making my own ice cream has always seemed complicated–needing lots of ice and rock salt– and quite time-consuming. That’s why I love nice cream.

The recipe card at the bottom of the page has the full list of ingredients with measurements and instructions.

Smoothies are a little different because they tend to have more ingredients. Usually, there is some type of liquid, such as almond milk or other plant milk. Some recipes like one shown below even add a little sweetener such as maple syrup or agave.

Another great frozen dessert to try is my Fruit Smoothie Bowls that are fantastic and versatile as well.

One of my favorite frozen smoothie recipes is Chocolate Banana Smoothie because it allows me to have a little bit of chocolate without having to bake a special treat. And, the banana is all that’s needed for sweetener.

Nutrition in fruit

“Fruit is high in antioxidants, low in fat, and high in fiber. Fruit is also full of water which helps to keep you hydrated and feeling full.

In addition, the potassium found in bananas decreases the loss of calcium from the body and increases the rate of bone building.”--Dr. Neal Barnard, Food for Life: Cancer Project
