How Eating God-Made Foods Changed My Life

Growing Up in the Age of Processed Food
I didn’t become 220 lbs. at 5’2” by eating just fruits and vegetables. I grew up in a time when fast food and sugary cereal became popular—spiraling out of control as the years passed. People got busier, moms went to work to help pay bills and keep food on the table, and convenience was crowned King.
Even though I grew up in a home with a vegetable garden and a mom who cooked (and made us eat) all kinds of whole foods, we still got sucked into the tornado of snack packs, Doritos, and Burger King. It was almost like we didn’t have any control. And once we partook of the evil “apple,” it was almost impossible to go back.
When Food Became Part of My Spiritual Journey
So, right after I became a plant-based eater in 2013, I watched “Engine 2 – Kitchen Rescue” on Netflix. It was a documentary that showed new plant-based eaters how to shop and cook with whole plant foods. I remember thinking, “He’s cooking with the foods God made.” Foods that came from seeds, planted in healthy soil, watered, and offered sunlight. This is how God intended for us to eat!
The recipes were made with single ingredients (tomatoes, beans, etc.) or they were made from a simple combination of whole ingredients. There weren’t any emulsifiers, colored dyes, or other junky ingredients mixed in.
It dawned on me that I had actually allowed my brain to be magnetically pulled in the wrong direction, and I needed to repent—which essentially means “to feel such sorrow for sin or fault as to be disposed to change one’s life for the better,” according to an online dictionary. I repeated this mantra–Eat the Foods God Made—over and over to twist that messed-up brain of mine out of the coil that was squeezing me to death. Literally.
Turning Away from the Factory and Back to the Garden
I started with the mantra, but we all know that action speaks louder than words. So, I made it my mission to identify foods I was eating as “from God” or not. In my heart, I wanted the food I ate to be that which He intended for me to eat. I didn’t want to put junk in my body.
Thankfully, the more I ate “the food that God made,” the less I desired that which was made by scientists and machines. God blessed me with better health and weight loss along the way. It almost became an obsession to see what past junk food I could re-create into a whole plant foods masterpiece! Turning my focus on the simplicity of God’s creations and away from foods made in processing plants as much as I could, I was blessed beyond measure.
Next time you plan a meal, choose a recipe, and reach for food to eat, ask yourself, “Is this the food God made?” Do everything you can to make His food the bulk of your diet. The good harvests will come!
