It’s Not Just About the Recipes

coffee, journal with bible verse, headphones for music.

I guess you’ve probably figured out by now that music inspires me.

Do you ever listen to artists like Lauren Daigle, Brandon Lake, MercyMe, NEEDTOBREATHE, or even Lifehouse? I love it when Christian artists cross over onto the secular charts. There’s something beautiful about watching their music reach people who might never have intentionally listened to a Christian song. Last week, I wrote about Nick Jonas and Brandon Lake pairing up for their new song, which is doing just that.

It reminds me a little of these Morning Brew reflections.

I regularly receive emails from people of all different backgrounds—Christians, Jewish readers, Buddhists, atheists, agnostics, and many others. What’s surprised me most is that so many of them aren’t writing about the recipes. They’re responding to the Morning Brew reflections.

They’re sharing stories, asking thoughtful questions, and encouraging me to keep writing. We don’t always agree on matters of faith, but the conversations are respectful, kind, and genuine. I treasure that.

It reminds me that hearts rarely change because someone wins an argument. You’ve probably heard the expression about “beating someone over the head with the Bible.” In all my years, I can’t think of anyone whose life was transformed by being argued into faith.

Jesus showed us a different way. He met people where they were. He listened. He cared. He loved them before they believed. And somehow, that love opened hearts in ways debates never could.

I don’t expect everyone who reads these reflections to believe what I believe. That’s okay.

My hope is simply that, whether someone comes for the recipes or stays for the Morning Brew, they’ll encounter kindness, encouragement, and the love of Christ through the words I share. That’s the example I want to follow.

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35
