Just a Jar, Fully Available

Last night, as I was drifting in and out of sleep—still wrapped in that quiet, dream-like space between waking and rest—a simple thought came to me: I am a jar.

In that stillness, I could almost see it—the jar of oil from Scripture, belonging to the widow who, by God’s provision, was sustained through famine. Day after day, she baked bread for her family and for the prophet Elijah, drawing from a jar that never ran dry. It wasn’t described as beautiful or ornate. It wasn’t overflowing or impressive. We’re simply told it held enough—enough for that day.

That’s what struck me most. The jar itself wasn’t extraordinary. It had no power of its own. It just was. Yet in God’s hands, it became the vessel through which life, nourishment, and hope flowed daily.

As I lay there, half asleep, I felt the gentle realization that I am that jar. And the oil—the life-giving oil—is the Holy Spirit.

A jar can’t create oil. It can’t refill itself. It can’t even move on its own. It simply makes itself available. But when it is placed where God intends, He fills it. And not always to the brim—sometimes just enough for what’s needed today.

When we slow down, stay attentive, and offer ourselves to God—ordinary, imperfect, and willing—He pours Himself into us. And through that quiet filling, He uses us to nourish others in ways we may never fully see.

We don’t have to be overflowing. We just have to be open.

“The jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah.” 1 Kings 17:16 (NIV)
