The Beauty of the In-Between

On Sunday, our pastor said something that really stayed with me this week. He said that too many of us have a “GPS faith.” We want God to tell us, “Turn left in one mile,” or “You’ll arrive at your destination at exactly this time.” In other words, we want clear directions, quick answers, and easy decisions. But life rarely works that way.
He was talking about the many transitions we go through in life — the “in between” seasons. Those times when we wonder:
Should I change jobs? Do I need to move? Should I go back to school? Am I supposed to pursue this opportunity? What direction should I take next?
Sometimes the questions are big, life-changing decisions. Other times, they’re smaller, everyday choices that still leave us uncertain.
The truth is, we all experience seasons of “in between.” It’s the space between where we are now and where God is leading us next. And sometimes, that space can feel uncomfortable. We want immediate clarity. We want floodlights shining far down the road so we can see every step ahead of us. But most of the time, God doesn’t give us floodlights. Instead, He gives us just enough light for the next step. Remember the lamp unto my feet? (Psalm 119:105)
That can be frustrating when we’re waiting for answers or praying for doors to open. We may feel like nothing is happening. But often, behind the scenes, God is arranging details, preparing hearts, opening opportunities, and building things within us that could never happen if everything came instantly. Believe me, I speak from experience here. There’s something in my personal life where I’ve been walking in between for a long time, but I’m convinced that the waiting is not wasted.
Sometimes the “in between” is where our faith grows the deepest because we learn to walk by faith and not by sight. We learn to trust God even when we can’t yet see the full picture. And maybe that’s the point.
If we could see every turn ahead, we might rely more on our own understanding than on God’s guidance. But faith requires trust. It asks us to keep moving forward even when the road ahead isn’t fully visible.
So if you find yourself in an “in between” season right now, wondering what’s next, take heart. God has not forgotten you. Just because you can’t see what He’s doing doesn’t mean He isn’t working. Sometimes the greatest growth happens in the waiting.
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7
