When Grace Enters the Bloodstream

communion of the Lord's supper with wine cup and bread on a table.

Recently, as I participated in Communion, a few unexpected thoughts began quietly stirring in my heart. The Lord’s Supper has always felt like such an intimate, holy pause—a sacred moment to reflect, remember, and realign. But this time felt different.

As I ate the bread and drank the juice, I couldn’t shake the thought that I was receiving the antidote. Everywhere I look right now, sickness seems to be swirling—flu, viruses, lingering colds. It feels like half the people I know are sick or just getting over something. Yet even more troubling is the sickness that runs much deeper. Our world is ill with sin—anger, bitterness, hatred, division, unkindness. These things spread quietly, just like germs we can’t see, infecting hearts, homes, and communities. Unseen, yet undeniably real.

And then this simple but powerful realization washed over me: the bread and the cup were about to pass through my body, into my digestive system, into my bloodstream. They were about to become part of me physically. What a picture. Because even more so, what they represent—the body and blood of Jesus—was being welcomed in spiritually. Not just remembered. Not just acknowledged. But received. Oh, how my heart was stirred by the truth that as I surrender more fully to Him, Jesus becomes more and more a part of me—shaping my thoughts, softening my heart, healing what sin has damaged.

As I looked around during Communion, I noticed a young boy beside me with his tongue in his little cup, carefully lapping up every last drop. He didn’t want to miss a single bit. The innocence and sincerity of that moment sank into my heart. Oh, that we would do the same. That we would hunger for Jesus with that kind of eagerness—desiring every drop of His grace, every ounce of His presence, holding nothing back.

Communion isn’t just a ritual. It’s a reminder—at least for me—that the only true cure for a sick world is Christ Himself. I know not everyone shares my faith, but this reflection comes honestly from my heart and from what brings me hope and healing. Jesus is the antidote—for sin, for brokenness, for hearts in need of restoration. And when I invite Him in, when I daily choose surrender over self, His life begins to flow through mine… bringing hope, healing, and quiet transformation from the inside out.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10
