Where the Light Gets In

Sometime back, I was talking with a friend about the deep trials another friend was walking through. You know that feeling — when someone you love is hurting and there’s nothing you can do but pray, listen, and ache right alongside them. In the middle of that conversation, my friend quietly said, “The wound is where the light gets in.”
That sentence lingered with me long after our conversation ended.
At first, it almost felt backwards. Wounds are painful. They’re messy. They’re the places we want to hide, bandage up, or pretend don’t exist. But what if those very places — the ones we wish away — are actually openings? Not signs of weakness, but invitations for healing, growth, and even grace.
I’ve seen this play out so many times. A friend who lost a job later discovered a calling they never would have pursued otherwise. A season of illness slowed someone down just enough to realign their priorities. A heartbreak softened a hardened heart and made room for compassion that hadn’t existed before. None of those experiences were easy — but each one allowed light to enter in ways comfort never could.
It doesn’t mean the pain is good. But it does mean the pain isn’t wasted.
If you’re walking through something hard right now, maybe the question isn’t “Why is this happening?” but “What might God be doing here?” Sometimes the very place that hurts the most becomes the place where hope begins to shine.
And maybe — just maybe — our wounds aren’t the end of the story, but the beginning of something brighter.
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:5
