What Are You Feeding Your Soul?

It’s still morning as I’m writing this, and I was just sitting on the front porch having my devotional and prayer time while Marley sniffed around the yard.
You guys know how much I love these early fall mornings. The air is finally cooler, everything feels a little quieter, and there’s just something about sitting outside with God before the day really gets going.
Part of my quiet time lately has been listening to The Worship Initiative, a free, short, 15-minute-ish devotional hosted by one of my favorite bands. They read Scripture, share a few thoughts about it, and then we sing a worship song together.
Afterward, I realized I was hungry, so I headed inside and whipped up a batch of my basic hummus. I grabbed some carrot sticks, celery, cucumber slices, and a few healthy oil-free crackers. Yes, that was breakfast. Stay with me here.
I decided to take my crazy little breakfast back outside because I wasn’t quite ready to give up the porch, the beautiful morning, or the worship music. As I sat there watching the sun come up, dipping a cracker into that freshly made hummus, a strange thought popped into my head.
This hummus is good for me. And so is worship.
Then I looked at the vegetables and crackers on my plate. They were good for me too, of course, but at that particular moment they were also serving another very important purpose. They were the transportation system getting the hummus into my mouth. And suddenly I thought about music.
Music is a transportation system, too. So are podcasts. Television. Social media. Conversations. Books. News. All of those voices we allow into our ears day after day are carrying something into us. The question is, what are they delivering?
We pay so much attention to what we put into our bodies. We read ingredient labels, look for healthier choices, and try to nourish ourselves with foods that will help us rather than harm us. But how often do we stop and consider what we’re feeding our minds and souls?
Philippians 4:8 tells us, “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
I don’t think that means we can only listen to worship music or that everything we watch, read, or hear has to be explicitly Christian. There are plenty of beautiful, funny, educational, and worthwhile things in this world. But I do think it’s worth occasionally asking ourselves this question. What is this carrying into me?
Is it feeding gratitude or discontent? Peace or anxiety? Compassion or anger? Hope or hopelessness? Is it drawing my thoughts toward things that are good, or quietly filling me with things I wouldn’t intentionally choose? Because what we repeatedly take in has a way of settling inside us.
By the time I finished my hummus that morning, I realized I’d had two breakfasts. One had nourished my body. The other had nourished my soul. And both reminded me that what we feed ourselves matters.
