Lessons We Keep — Even After the Soap Is Gone

When I think of my late mother-in-law, I’m reminded of how deeply gratitude can shape a person. Born during the Great Depression, she learned early to value every little thing — even something as small as a sliver of soap. I still remember when she worked as a caregiver for an older woman with a beautiful home and every comfort. When the lady would toss away her smaller bars of fancy soap, my mother-in-law would gently wrap them up and bring them home.

Some might have seen that as odd, but to me, it was a quiet act of gratitude and stewardship. It was her way of saying, “Nothing should go to waste, because everything is a gift.” And you know what? That lesson stuck with me. To this day, I find myself unable to throw away small bars of soap — even when I’d much rather reach for a nice, new, full-sized one. It’s like a gentle reminder of her every time I take a bath with a small bar of soap.

We live in a world that constantly tells us to want more, to replace rather than repair, to toss aside rather than treasure. But maybe true richness comes from appreciating what we already have — no matter how small it seems.

As Scripture reminds us, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.” (Luke 16:10)
May we all learn to live with the same grateful heart — one that sees abundance even in the smallest bar of soap.
