When the Light Inside Is Brighter Than the Storm Outside

As I write this, it’s a cold, rainy fall day here in Western NC. The temps are only in the 40s, and I’m tucked in my office, warm and dry. Days like this might sound gloomy to some, but for me, they bring a sense of comfort. There’s something about the chill and the rain outside that makes being cozy inside feel even more like a blessing.
Even from the comfort of my office, I can imagine what my little house must look like from the outside on this cold, rainy afternoon. I picture the warm light spilling from the windows, cutting through the gray drizzle like something out of a Thomas Kinkade painting—a soft, inviting glow that promises comfort, safety, and peace inside. I’ve always loved the way he captured warmth and hope, and imagining my home this way reminds me to pause and appreciate the blessings within.
Reflecting on days like this also reminds me of times in my life when comfort wasn’t guaranteed—when the roof leaked, when the power bill felt like a burden, or when financial stress weighed heavily. I’ve faced my share of difficult seasons, and looking back, I realize those struggles shaped my appreciation for the simple blessings I have now.
Rainy, cold days like this naturally put me in a gratitude mindset. I start counting my blessings—the warmth of my home, a cup of tea, the work I love, the people I get to share life with. And when I focus on gratitude, my mood and outlook shift. It’s like medicine for the soul.
There’s a song by Brandon Lake called Gratitude that always lifts my spirits. It’s a beautiful reminder that no matter the weather outside—or the storms we face in life—choosing gratitude can change everything.
I hope this reflection lifts your spirits today, wherever you are.
“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” —1 Thessalonians 5:18
