More Than Just Showing Up

healing hands of Jesus touching someone.

Several months ago at church, someone shared a word picture that has stayed with me ever since. It was simple, but so vivid and meaningful that I haven’t been able to shake it.

He said he goes to the chiropractor every week for his back. Then one day, this thought hit him while he was waiting for his appointment: What if I showed up every week and just sat in the waiting room, watching other people go in and out, but never actually let the doctor treat me? Or what if I went all the way back to the exam room, talked about where I hurt, had a nice conversation, and then walked right back out unchanged and still in pain?

Then he said something that really struck me. His words were, “Our situations don’t change with conversation alone. More than just showing up, we have to allow the One with the power to put His hands on us.”

To press and move and realign what’s out of place. To loosen what’s stuck. To heal what’s hurting.

I’ve thought about that so many times since. How often do we show up to church, to prayer, to community, but stop short of true surrender? We talk about the pain. We acknowledge what isn’t working. But then we walk away without fully letting the Healer do what only He can do.

Whatever it is in your life right now—whatever deep down you know needs healing, shifting, restoring, or releasing—my encouragement to you (and honestly, to myself too) is this: Don’t stop at showing up. Let Him touch it. Lay it down and let Him work.

He’s not just a good listener. He’s a miracle worker.

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” —Psalm 147:3 (NIV)
