Confessions of a Happy Homebody

Right now, I need to go run errands in town—multiple grocery stores and a couple of other stops—and I keep trying to figure out if my work schedule will somehow allow me to put it off until tomorrow.

The older I get, the more I realize: I’m a homebody through and through—and I truly love working from home. Even when I was younger, I wasn’t exactly adventurous, but I did get out a bit more. Now, living out in the country, there’s truly nowhere else I’d rather be. Crowded stores, busy streets, and noisy towns hold little appeal for me. Give me a quiet morning walking the trails with the dogs, on my front porch with a book in hand, or working out on our property, and my heart is full.

I have family and friends who are the complete opposite—true extroverts who feel most alive in the middle of activity and surrounded by people. Even my husband is much more of a people person than I am. And I love that about them. But for me? Watching squirrels, listening to birdsong, and feeling the breeze on my porch brings a kind of peace I can’t find anywhere else.

In a world that often praises hustle, crowds, and constant stimulation, it can be easy to feel like we’re supposed to always be on the go. But peace isn’t easily found in motion. More often, it’s found in stillness.

There’s a kind of sacredness in slowing down and being present—in soaking in the quiet beauty right in front of us. For some, that might be found in bustling places. But for many of us, it’s in the quiet corners of life—on a porch, in a garden, beside a window—that we feel the deepest sense of peace.

So if you’ve ever felt out of place in the noise of the world, take heart. You’re not missing out. You’re simply drawn toward stillness, simplicity, and a quieter kind of joy.

And friend, that’s a beautiful place to be.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
