Strength for Today

Yesterday afternoon, I started feeling a little off. A bit more tired than usual, with that familiar heaviness in my nose and sinuses—the kind that whispers, something might be coming. Nothing dramatic, just enough to notice.

I went on with my day anyway. A couple of miles on the treadmill, some focused time on the website, the usual household tasks. I drank plenty of water, ate nourishing food, and turned in early, hoping rest would do its quiet work.

This morning, I felt about the same. Not worse, thankfully—but snow is on the way, and with last week’s ice storm still fresh in our minds (and our pantry shelves), there’s a lot that needs to be done to prepare for possibly being homebound again. Supplies are low, the to-do list feels long, and the timing isn’t ideal. And, I think that’s where the lesson began to settle in.

Sometimes life asks us to hold two truths at the same time: take care of yourself and show up for what needs to be done. Wisdom isn’t always found in stopping everything, nor is it found in pushing ourselves to the breaking point. Often, it’s in the quiet discernment of knowing how to pace ourselves—listening to our bodies, honoring our limits, and still moving forward with intention.

This season has reminded me that preparation doesn’t come from panic, and productivity doesn’t have to come at the expense of peace. We do the next right thing, with grace. We stay focused, but gentle. We trust that God meets us in the middle—between rest and responsibility.

And sometimes, that’s more than enough.

“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” Isaiah 40:29
