The Beauty of Being Fitted Together

Every Monday evening at 6:30, I make the short 4-mile drive to church for our women’s Bible study. What started in the summer of 2023 as simply “something to try” has become one of the most meaningful parts of my week. Our group is… Well, beautifully unexpected.

We’re a mix of older Mennonite women wearing head coverings, 40-somethings with tattoos, and younger women in their 20s and 30s. We come from all kinds of denominational backgrounds. In my own journey alone, I’ve been Baptist, Brethren, PCA Presbyterian, non-denominational—and now part of a traditional Mennonite church that has grown into a community church. And that’s just me. Every woman in that upper room carries a story.

Our Bible study leader, for example, once walked a path deep into new age practices—even witchcraft. And today, she is one of the most powerful, loving, and boldly honest Christian teachers I know. Watching how far she has come is a testimony in itself. Her heart for people is real, raw, and full of grace.

This week, I listened to a sermon by Tim Keller based on 1 Peter 2:4–10, and it made me think about our group in a whole new way. He talked about how believers are like “living stones,” being carefully fitted together to form something strong and purposeful—a spiritual house for God’s work. That image stayed with me because I have a visual for it every time I walk out my front door.

Back in 2022, we had masons working on our home for months, building beautiful stonework. I remember watching them carefully select each stone—shaping, chiseling, placing, and securing it. No two stones were alike. Each one had its own size, texture, and character. But together, they created something incredibly strong and stunning. And that’s exactly what I see every Monday night.

A group of women—different ages, backgrounds, pasts, and even countries of origin—being carefully shaped and placed by the Master Stoneworker. Fitted together. Strengthened together. Built into something far greater than any one of us could be alone.

It’s not random. It’s intentional.

And there is something powerful that happens when we allow God to use our differences to build something beautiful.

These women have become more than just a Bible study group. They’ve become my sisters. And what we’re building together is something that will last.

“Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of His household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the chief cornerstone. In Him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in Him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit.” Ephesians 2:19–22
