Rooted Not Rattled

Back in May of 2025, I experienced something unusual for Western North Carolina—a 4.1 earthquake! I was sitting on my front porch in the quiet of the morning when the ground gave a little shake. My husband, still in bed, felt it too. He actually thought it was me crawling back under the covers until he turned and saw the bed was empty.
Interestingly, when I talked with friends afterward, not everyone noticed it. A friend working in her garden just a few miles away felt nothing. Others who were standing or sitting in their cars didn’t notice a thing either. But those of us resting on something solid, like a chair or bed, felt it strongly.
It made me wonder—maybe when we’re directly on the ground, our bodies naturally act like shock absorbers, softening the tremors. But when we’re on something stationary, with no “give,” we feel every shake.
And that got me thinking about life. Sometimes we face tremors in our own world—shakes of uncertainty, stress, or even loss. When we’re grounded and rooted, we can absorb those shocks with a little more grace. But if we’re stiff, rigid, or trying to hold ourselves up alone, every shake feels bigger and harder to bear.
The reminder for me was this: stay grounded—in faith, in gratitude, in community. That’s what helps us absorb life’s inevitable tremors without toppling over.
“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” Colossians 2:6–7
