Lessons from a Blooming Magnolia Tree

There is a tree in our front yard that I love. It was planted years ago by my late mother-in-law, and she always called it a tulip tree because the blooms this time of year look just like pink tulips. I’ve since learned its official name is a saucer magnolia, but I still think of it as her tulip tree.

Right now, the blooms are bursting out all over, and it’s absolutely beautiful. What makes it especially stunning is that the flowers appear before the leaves. There are no green leaves yet to hide them—just branches covered in bright pink blossoms. The color seems to pop even more because there’s nothing competing with it.

What fascinates me most is something I noticed a while back. Each fall, the buds for these flowers actually begin forming on the branches. They develop a fuzzy little shell that protects them through the winter months. Through the cold, the snow, and the ice, those tiny buds just sit there quietly waiting.

Then, when the weather hints at the slightest bit of sunshine and warmth, they begin opening up into this burst of beauty. It’s almost like they’re celebrating that they made it through the winter.

Watching that tree reminds me that sometimes life has seasons that feel a lot like winter. Things can seem quiet, slow, or even a little harsh. But often, during those very seasons, God is doing something we can’t yet see—forming the buds that will eventually bloom.

And when the time is right, what looked like a bare branch can suddenly burst into something beautiful.

Sometimes the most beautiful blooms come after the hardest winters. 🌸

“Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come.” Song of Solomon 2:12 (NIV)
