The Gift of a Secret Place

One of the best gifts we can give ourselves each day is a little time and space for quiet. For me, that “secret place” is where I can pause, breathe, and center myself before the day’s busyness begins.
Most mornings, I’m up around 6 a.m.—feeding the animals, making breakfast, packing my husband’s lunch, and jumping into work. But by 7 a.m., I slip out to our front porch with a cup of coffee and my devotional books. That’s when I surrender my plans for the day to God, asking Him for guidance and strength to face whatever comes—good or bad.
Over the seasons, my secret place shifts. In summer, it’s the porch or the benches in the field behind our home. In winter, it’s the cozy chair in front of the living room window. The location changes, but the purpose remains the same: to draw closer to God, to rest in His presence, and to let Him lead.
The truth is, it’s not about the place at all—it’s about the time spent in reflection and renewal. Having a secret place helps me start my day with peace instead of chaos, direction instead of distraction.
Do you have a secret place? If not, I encourage you to find one. It doesn’t need to be hidden away or fancy—just a quiet spot where you can pause, reflect, and connect. Your heart will thank you, and so will everyone around you.
“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1)
