What’s Simmering in Your Soul?

You know how, when you’re boiling soup or vegetables on the stovetop, and the steam gathers so thickly over the pot that you can’t quite see what’s inside? Last week, while I was making a big pot of vegetable soup, I found myself waving my hand over the top trying to get a peek at the carrots and potatoes simmering beneath. And right in that moment, a thought nudged my heart.
We walk through life with a steam cloud (sin filter) of our own sometimes.
Not water vapor, of course—but things like irritation, pride, selfishness, defensiveness, old wounds, unforgiveness, and habits we don’t like to name out loud. They hover over our vision, blurring what’s right in front of us. We get so close to our own thoughts, so wrapped up in our own feelings, that we can’t see clearly anymore. We think we know what’s going on beneath the surface… but truthfully, we’re guessing through the haze.
And just like that moment when you blow across the pot and the steam parts—just enough to see what’s really cooking underneath—we sometimes need a breath like that in our spirit.
A breath not from ourselves, but from the Holy Spirit.
Because one gentle, holy breath can clear away the fog of distraction, resentment, or self-focus. One loving whisper from God can reveal what’s been there all along—His will, His goodness, His guidance, His peace. Suddenly, we see the ingredients of our life again: the blessings, the purpose, the people we’re called to love. Sometimes clarity doesn’t come from trying harder, but from simply saying:
“Lord, clear my vision. Blow away anything that keeps me from seeing You.”
May we daily ask for that breath… so we can walk forward with clarity, humility, and eyes fixed on Him.
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” John 16:13
