The Hummingbird at My Window

My sister dropped by for a visit the other day, and as we were sitting on the couch chatting, a hummingbird hovered right outside the big picture window in our living room. It just hung there, peeking in at us as if it wanted to join the conversation!
She laughed and said, “I didn’t know you had a hummingbird feeder. Where is it?” I smiled and told her I don’t have one.
She looked surprised because we have hummingbirds around our front porch all the time. They hover near the windows, dart between the flowers, and seem perfectly content spending time there.
The truth is, we’ve never needed a feeder. Our flowering shrubs, blooming trees, and colorful plants provide everything they’re looking for.
After she left, I couldn’t stop thinking about that little hummingbird. It made me wonder, what are people drawn to when they look at my life?
I know not everyone reading this shares my faith, and that’s perfectly okay. Thank you for being patient as I share what I feel God is teaching me. For those who are Christians, we often feel pressure to have all the right words or know exactly what to say to point others to Him. But maybe one of the greatest witnesses we can have is simply cultivating a life where the fruit of the Spirit is evident.
Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
When these qualities are growing in us, people notice. They may not even know why they’re drawn to us, but they sense something different. Just like the hummingbirds naturally find the flowers, people are often drawn to lives that are rooted in God.
Maybe our goal isn’t to become better at attracting people to ourselves. Maybe it’s simply to stay so deeply rooted in God that His beauty naturally shines through us.
Just like those hummingbirds, people are looking for something life-giving. May they find a glimpse of Jesus when they spend time with us.
Jesus said, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35)
