Trusting God Between Midnight and Sunrise

Every now and then, I find myself lying awake at night—my mind quietly racing over something that’s found its way into my thoughts. It doesn’t even have to be anything big or serious. Just something that unsettles my peace. I toss and turn, glance at the clock, and before I know it, I’ve managed maybe three or four hours of sleep. And let me tell you—that is not my sweet spot. My happy place is a solid nine hours, waking up refreshed and ready to take on the world.

Lately, though, I’ve been learning something new during those restless nights. Instead of wrestling with my thoughts, I’ve started whispering a simple prayer—asking God for peace and rest, and intentionally releasing my worries into His hands. Sometimes it’s just a few quiet words in the dark, other times I’m lying there with my right hand actually lifted up in the air, asking him to take it and quiet my spirit. There’s something powerful about surrendering what I can’t control and trusting Him to hold it for me. And here’s the beautiful part.

Even on those sleep-deprived mornings, when I step outside early to take Marley out to potty and catch the sun beginning to rise, everything shifts. That soft glow. The stillness. The promise of a new day. It gently reminds me that whatever felt so heavy in the night doesn’t have the same grip in the light. Perspective is a powerful thing.

Sometimes, the best answer to a restless night isn’t solving every problem before morning—but trusting enough to rest, waiting for the light, and remembering who we’ve placed our hope in. Time and time again, the sunrise brings clarity, calm, and the quiet assurance that I’m being held—even when my thoughts try to convince me otherwise.

“Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.” Psalm 30:5
