The Quiet Legacy of Grandma Edwards

Sunday afternoon, we carried on one of our sweetest traditions—decorating the little Easter egg tree in our yard with some of the grandnieces and nephews.

This wasn’t just any activity. It’s something my late mother-in-law did every single year. She started decorating this tree long before these little ones were even born. And when we renovated the old homeplace back in 2020–2022, I knew in my heart this was one tradition we had to keep.

So there we were, little hands hanging bright, plastic eggs on tiny branches, cousins laughing, kids playing at the creek, and the kind of simple joy you wish you could bottle up forever.

Later that evening, I found myself scrolling through the photos I took on my phone that day. And I had this overwhelming, warm feeling—like Grandma Edwards would be smiling, seeing it all continue. Not just the tree but the love, the laughter, the togetherness. And it got me thinking.

Maybe the most meaningful parts of our lives aren’t the big, flashy moments. Maybe they’re these quiet traditions that get passed down. Simple acts of love that ripple through generations.

We don’t always realize it, but the things we do today, the meals we make, the traditions we keep, the time we invest in our families, they’re planting seeds. Seeds of connection. Seeds of belonging. Seeds of love that outlive us.

Grandma Edwards probably never imagined how much that little Easter egg tree would come to mean one day. But here we are, years later, still gathering around it, still making memories because of something she started.

It’s a gentle reminder to me that what we do matters. The small things matter. And maybe it’s also a little nudge to ask ourselves: What are we planting today that will grow long after we’re gone?

As we head into this Easter season—a time all about renewal, hope, and new life—I’m reminded that nothing done in love is ever wasted. God has a beautiful way of multiplying even our smallest acts of faithfulness into something lasting.

And sometimes, it looks like a little tree, covered in colorful plastic eggs, surrounded by laughter.
