What a Massage Taught Me About God

A peaceful massage setting: soft lighting, warm tones, maybe a rolled towel or candles on a massage table.

Until this year, I had only had one massage in my whole life—and I had no idea what I was missing. After discovering that some of my neck and spine issues stemmed from a birth defect (a fusion I was born with), I went through weeks of physical therapy and began getting monthly massages.

My massage therapist is incredible. She knows how to find and release stiffness in muscles that even my yoga and physical therapy can’t quite reach. It’s amazing how deep those knots can hide—layers beneath the surface—until someone skilled and intentional works them out.

The other day, as I was lying there during my session, it hit me how much this reminds me of what I like to call a spiritual massage.

Just like physical tension builds up quietly over time, we can carry hidden spiritual knots too—hurt, worry, pride, or even busyness that keeps us from resting in God’s peace. And sometimes, God lovingly presses into those areas through His Word, circumstances, or the people He places around us. It’s not always comfortable in the moment, but He’s reaching deep to heal what’s been tight and tense for far too long.

When we allow Him to do that deep work, we come away lighter, freer, and restored in ways nothing else could accomplish.

So maybe the next time you’re feeling a little “stiff” in spirit, invite God to give you a spiritual massage. You might be surprised at what He loosens, what He heals, and how much better you feel when you surrender to His touch.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”–Psalm 51:10
