A Life Lesson on Contentment (from Someone Who’s Lived a Lot of Life)

I want to share something personal with you—something I’ve been quietly reflecting on these past few weeks. It was sparked by a devotional book I’m reading, and the moment I read it, I felt it deep in my bones:
“I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.”
Those words hit differently when you’ve lived them. And, I have.
Most of my life would probably be considered “lower middle income” and sometimes just lower by many standards. There were years—many of them—when money was tight, and the calendar itself, especially this time of year, felt like a financial reminder. Every fall brought what I used to call “the triple whammy”: paying property taxes, filling our 250-gallon fuel tank before winter, and trying to make sure there were Christmas gifts for our big, extended family full of little ones.
I can still feel the knot in my stomach when all three hit at once every December. That combination used to keep me up some nights.
But woven through those lean years were blessings—so many that I lost count. Funds sometimes unexpectedly showing up. Strength I didn’t know I had. Peace that didn’t match the circumstances. Looking back, I can honestly say those years were good years.
Only in the last few years have my financial circumstances shifted a bit. We’re still not what anyone would call wealthy—and that’s more than fine with me. But just last week, in the middle of an ordinary day, I remembered “the triple whammy” and my heart skipped a beat. This time, not from fear… but from gratitude. Deep, quiet gratitude.
The devotional I’m currently reading went on to talk about how contentment isn’t something we’re born with. Life teaches it—slowly, sometimes painfully, but always purposefully. We learn it when we have little and when we have plenty. We learn it in seasons when everything feels scarce and in seasons when things finally feel easier than they used to.
And here’s the part that really resonated with me: circumstances will change, but what anchors us—love, faith, gratitude, perspective, purpose—those things can remain steady. They can carry us through the highs without making us proud, and through the lows without making us bitter.
I know not everyone reading this shares my faith, and that’s okay—you’re welcome here. But I think we can all agree on this: life comes in waves. Some years we abound; some years we barely make it through. And if we can find a way to stay grounded—steady, grateful, hopeful—even when life doesn’t go according to plan, there’s a kind of quiet strength that grows in us.
That’s the lesson I’ve been learning all these years.
Contentment isn’t settling. It’s trusting—trusting that even when a ray of light is taken away, the sun behind it is still shining. Trusting that we can face seasons of lack without losing heart, and seasons of abundance without losing ourselves.
And that’s what I wanted to share with you today. If this is a season of struggle for you, I hope you feel a little less alone. And if this is a season of abundance, I hope you soak it in with gratitude. Either way, may you find the steady, unshakeable peace that doesn’t depend on what you have, but on what holds you.
