The Best Birthday Gift

peaceful lake in the mountains.

My birthday is coming up next week, and just like every year, I told my husband not to buy me a present.

Instead, I asked for something much simpler. I want him to take Marley and me to the lake for the day.

This isn’t the same lake we visited on vacation last month. This one is much closer to home and feels much more wild and untouched. There are only a couple dozen houses scattered around the entire shoreline. The rest is forest, mountains, waterfalls, and quiet coves waiting to be explored. It’s my favorite lake!

The waterfalls are beautiful, and if you go during the week, it often feels like you have the whole place to yourself. The only sounds are the breeze moving through the trees, birds singing in the distance, and the rushing waterfalls.

Of course, it means my husband has to take a personal day off work, but he never complains. Truth be told, he loves being there just as much as I do.

Some people enjoy receiving gifts, going shopping, or celebrating with a fancy dinner out. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

But somewhere along the way, I’ve realized that the things I treasure most can’t be wrapped in a box.

Give me a quiet lake, a hiking trail through the woods, a waterfall hidden around the next bend, or an afternoon spent exploring God’s creation, and I’m perfectly happy.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve found myself valuing experiences more than possessions. The excitement of a new purchase usually fades pretty quickly, but the memories we make with the people we love tend to stay with us for years.

Sometimes the greatest gifts aren’t things at all. Sometimes they’re moments. A walk in the woods. A day on the water. Time spent with someone you love. A grateful heart.

As another birthday approaches, I’m reminded once again that I already have so much to be thankful for. And if I get to spend a day at my favorite lake with my husband and Marley, surrounded by the beauty of God’s creation, I can’t imagine a better gift than that.
