Look Up

One thing I love to do whenever I’m outside is look up. It doesn’t matter whether the day is sunny, cloudy, foggy, or somewhere in between. I just love lifting my eyes toward the sky.
You know how people often tell us to “look up” when we’re feeling discouraged? Usually, they mean it figuratively—to look for the good, focus on our blessings, or remember that better days are ahead. That’s always good advice.
But have you ever tried literally looking up? It’s amazing how much it can change your perspective.
When I’m hiking the trails around here, I spend a lot of time looking down. There are roots to step over, rocks to avoid, holes to watch for, and this time of year, even the occasional snake crossing the path. Looking down is necessary. But every chance I get, I lift my eyes.
In the woods, I see towering trees stretching up, their branches weaving together to form a beautiful canopy overhead. When the trail opens into a clearing, I see the sky—sometimes bright blue, sometimes filled with gray clouds, and often a mixture of both.
And every single time, something happens inside me. My problems don’t magically disappear. My to-do list doesn’t get shorter. Life doesn’t suddenly become easier. But my perspective changes.
Looking up reminds me how big this world is and how small my worries often are. It awakens a sense of wonder that gets buried beneath deadlines, responsibilities, and the busyness of everyday life.
Sometimes I think we spend so much time staring at the ground in front of us that we forget to notice the beauty above us. And maybe that’s true spiritually as well.
We become focused on our problems, our fears, our schedules, and our circumstances. Our eyes drift downward until all we can see are the obstacles in our path.
Yet Scripture repeatedly invites us to lift our eyes. To remember where our help comes from. To remember who is in control. To remember that there is a God far bigger than anything we face.
The next time you’re outside, try it. Pause for a moment. Lift your eyes. Look up at the trees. Look up at the clouds. Look up at the sky. And let yourself wonder.
You might be surprised how much a simple upward glance can change your perspective.
“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” — 📖Psalm 121:1-2
