Feeding the Body… and the Soul

We’ve all heard the saying, “You are what you eat,” and honestly—it’s true. It’s one of the reasons so many of us have chosen a plant-based lifestyle. We want bodies that feel healthy, alive, and energized…not weighed down by chemicals, excess saturated fat, and that sluggish feeling so many of us remember all too well. Most of us have lived it both ways, and we know the difference firsthand.
Recently, though, I realized something deeper. That same truth applies not just to our physical health but to our spiritual and mental lives as well.
Just as our bodies are shaped by what we eat, our minds are shaped by what we consistently consume. What we read. What we watch. What we scroll past day after day. What we listen to. When you think about it that way, it’s no wonder we see so much outrage, anxiety, and heaviness around us.
I know this is true in my own life. Physically, I feel my best when I’m nourishing my body with vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and fruit. But even more importantly, I am so much better mentally and spiritually when I’m intentional about what I’m feeding my soul—spending time in Scripture, listening to uplifting music, choosing encouraging programs, and surrounding myself with people who point me toward hope and truth.
Little by little, what we take in shapes who we are becoming.
So just like we’ve learned to choose foods that help us thrive physically, maybe this is a gentle reminder to be just as mindful about what we’re feeding our hearts and minds. Because in the end, we truly do become what we consume—in body, mind, and spirit.
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Proverbs 4:23
