Lessons From an Old Magnolia Tree

At the corner of our yard stands a grand old Southern magnolia tree. Its glossy green leaves shine year-round, and in summer, its creamy white blossoms open wide, releasing the most beautiful fragrance into the air. It’s one of my favorite parts of our home—but I didn’t plant it.
I’m fairly certain this tree was planted decades ago by my late mother-in-law. We live on what was once my husband’s family homestead, and this magnolia has stood watch over generations of children playing in its branches—including my own grown daughter when she was little. It has quietly witnessed laughter, scraped knees, family gatherings, and quiet moments in the shade.
What I love most about this tree is that it’s an evergreen. No matter how cold or snowy the winter gets, its strong, waxy leaves hold firm. Through every season, it remains rooted, steady, and full of life. In the heat of summer, it offers thick, cooling shade—just like the comfort of someone who’s stood the test of time.
To me, this magnolia is more than just a tree. It’s a symbol of resilience, deep roots, and grace through changing seasons. It reminds me that even when life shifts around us—whether we’re in a season of growth or a time of waiting—we can stay grounded in what matters most: faith, family, and the quiet strength we pass on.
As you go through your own week, I hope you’ll find encouragement in this simple truth: we don’t always choose where we’re planted, but we can grow deep roots, stand tall, and offer shade and beauty to those around us—just like that old magnolia.
“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.” Jeremiah 17:7–8 (NIV)
