I’ve been enjoying my flower beds so much lately. Everything is starting to bloom, and it just makes my heart happy. My azaleas are showing off right now—and the fact that they bloom again in the fall? That’s just a bonus blessing I never get tired of.
Over the years, I’ve realized something about myself. I’m actually pretty good at keeping plants and shrubs alive as long as they’re planted in the ground.
Flower pots? That’s a different story.
I’ve tried so many times to add potted flowers around my beds, but without fail, I struggle. One year I overwater them. The next, I forget to water them enough. Those poor plants are completely dependent on me, and let’s just say, I don’t always get it right.
Meanwhile, the plants in the ground are out there thriving. They have access to everything they need—water, nutrients, stability. Their roots go deep, and they draw from the source exactly what’s needed, when it’s needed.
But the potted plants? They sit right there, so close to the ground, yet unable to reach it.
Last summer, I finally gave up on the two flower pots by my front door that I love so much. After watering those flowers to death (yes, really), I stuck some silk flowers in the dirt—and honestly, they look beautiful and require zero maintenance!
But as I stood there the other day, looking at those pots, I couldn’t help but think, there’s a lesson here. How often do we live like those potted plants? We stay close to the Source, but not truly connected.
We rely on our own strength, our own effort, our own ability to “manage” things, and then wonder why we feel drained, dry, or overwhelmed. We try to control everything—sometimes overdoing it, sometimes neglecting what matters most—but either way, we’re left struggling.
All the while, God is right there offering everything we need.
Just like those plants in the ground, when we are truly rooted—deeply connected—we don’t have to strive the same way. We can draw from His strength, His peace, His provision. He knows exactly what we need and when we need it.
It makes me think of Jeremiah 17:7-8—how those who trust in the Lord are like a tree planted by the water, sending out roots by the stream. It doesn’t fear when heat comes. Its leaves stay green. It never fails to bear fruit.
That’s the life I want.
Not one where I’m sitting in a pot, trying to survive on my own, but one where I’m planted, rooted, and fully connected to the One who sustains me.
