Running on Empty: A Simple Reminder to Stay Connected

The other day, I had one of those nonstop, running-in-every-direction kind of days. By the time evening rolled around, I finally slowed down enough to take the dogs out for a walk on the trails.
Somewhere along the way, I glanced at my phone and realized it was completely dead. Not just low—stone dead. Turned off. No signal, no connection, nothing. And the funny thing is, I have no idea how long it had been that way.
All day long, I had been going about my business, assuming I was connected. Assuming I could make a call if I needed to. Assuming I could receive a message. There’s a certain comfort, even a sense of safety, in just knowing your phone is there and working.
But it wasn’t. And it made me stop and think. How often do we do the same thing in our spiritual lives?
We move through our days assuming we’re connected to God. We believe we’re listening, guided, and plugged in, but if we’re honest, sometimes we haven’t paused to check in at all. No time in prayer. No quiet moments. No real connection.
We’re running on yesterday’s charge.
Just like my phone, everything can look fine on the outside, but on the inside, the connection may be completely drained.
The good news is, it doesn’t take much to reconnect. We don’t need anything complicated—just a willing heart and a few quiet moments to plug back in. A simple prayer. A deep breath. A reminder of His presence.
Because, unlike our phones, God never loses signal. He’s always there, ready to speak, guide, and fill us back up.
Maybe today is a good day to pause, check your “battery,” and spend a little time recharging.
“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” James 4:8
