Faithful Care, One Stretch at a Time

A few times a week, you’ll find me on my mat at home doing yoga—not for enlightenment, chanting, or mantras (none of that happening here 😄), but for my joints, my muscles, and a little much-needed stress relief in my day.

I started yoga back in 2013 and attended local classes at first so I could learn proper form. Over time, it became something I could comfortably do at home. What began as simple stretching has turned into one of the most helpful tools I’ve found for caring for my body. It’s improved my hips, back, shoulders, and neck more than I ever expected—and it does wonders for releasing tension I didn’t even realize I was holding.

I practice gentle yoga, not the aerobic kind. I’m not trying to work up a sweat—I’m trying to relax. I already get my movement through walking, hiking, and strength training, so yoga fills a different role. It stretches muscles and tendons, strengthens balance, increases flexibility, and offers real stress relief. It’s just one piece of my self-care routine, but it’s an important one.

What I love most is how quiet the time feels. As I move through each stretch, I focus on the tension leaving my body, and I often use that time for prayer. There’s something meaningful about slowing down, listening to your body, and inviting God into those small moments of care and gratitude.

If you’re dealing with joint pain, sciatica, or muscle and tendon issues, I truly encourage you to consider giving gentle yoga a try. Find a class near you, go at your own pace, and listen to your body. Sometimes caring for ourselves isn’t about doing more—it’s about learning how to slow down, breathe, and tend to what God has already given us.

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit…? So glorify God in your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (ESV)

When I first saw this 5-minute video, I had just started my journey back to health. It moved and inspired me more than I can express. Arthur Boorman’s determination is infectious. This video is what piqued my interest in yoga, which helped change my life too. He is plant-based too. Warning, you will need a Kleenex.
