God Sees What We Can’t

Watermelon is my favorite this time of year. Just this afternoon, I cut one open and ate a quarter of it all by myself.
Thirty-five years ago, when I was pregnant with our daughter, I ate more watermelons than I could count. That child was practically made out of watermelon!
I start buying them as soon as they show up in the grocery stores each spring, but I’ve learned they’re usually not at their best until later in the summer. Still, every year I convince myself, “Maybe this one’s the one.” You know how that goes.
I’ve cut into watermelons that were barely pink inside, too firm, overripe, mealy, or so bland they hardly tasted like watermelon at all. From the outside, they all looked promising. But you never really know what’s inside until you cut them open.
As I was standing at the kitchen counter today, it struck me how often we do the same thing with life.
We make assumptions based on what we can see. We think someone has it all together because they always have a smile on their face. We assume a closed door is the end of the story. We convince ourselves that a difficult season means God has forgotten us. But we’re only seeing the outside. God sees what we can’t.
He knows what’s happening beneath the surface—in our hearts, in other people’s lives, and in circumstances we don’t yet understand.
“The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”1 Samuel16:7
