When the Thunder Rolls

stormy day, looking out a window at the rain and dark clouds.

On these hot summer days, I love when afternoon thunderstorms roll in to cool things down and give my thirsty flower beds a much-needed drink. I don’t enjoy lightning when it’s close, but I do love the deep rumble of thunder, even when it shakes the walls of our farmhouse just a little.

My late mother-in-law, who lived in this house before we did, felt very differently. If a storm came through while we were visiting, we’d often find her sitting in a chair in the dark hallway with her feet tucked safely off the floor. She was terribly afraid of thunderstorms.

I’m just the opposite. Maybe it’s because this old farmhouse feels so solid. The walls were built with cinder blocks and later covered with stone, so whenever the wind howls or the thunder rolls, I actually feel safe. It reminds me of a fortress—strong, secure, and able to withstand whatever the storm brings.

As I was listening to the thunder the other afternoon, it occurred to me that we all need a place of refuge. Not just from summer storms, but from the storms of life. There are seasons when the winds of uncertainty blow, when bad news arrives unexpectedly, or when life simply feels overwhelming.

The wonderful thing about our faith is that our security doesn’t come from thick walls or a sturdy roof. It comes from knowing that no matter what is happening around us, God is our refuge.

Psalm 46 begins with these comforting words: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” I love that it doesn’t say we might have trouble someday. It assumes storms will come—but it also reminds us that we’re never facing them alone.

Life’s storms may still shake us from time to time, but they don’t have to shake our foundation. When our trust is anchored in the Lord, we can have peace even while the thunder is still rolling overhead.

So the next time you hear thunder in the distance, let it be a gentle reminder that the safest place you’ll ever find isn’t inside four sturdy walls—it’s in the loving arms of our Heavenly Father.
