From Bland to Beautiful: A Lesson from Tofu

The first time I ever heard the word tofu, I’ll be honest—I wrinkled my nose. It just sounded bland, mushy, and a little strange.
My first attempt didn’t help its reputation either. I tossed it straight from the package into a pan, expecting something magical to happen. Instead, I ended up with soft, flavorless cubes that made me seriously question why anyone liked it. I was pretty close to giving up on tofu altogether.
But then I learned something that changed everything—the secret is in the preparation.
Pressing out the excess moisture, giving it time to soak up a flavorful marinade, and cooking it until it’s perfectly crisp on the outside completely transforms it. What once seemed dull becomes savory, satisfying, and something you actually look forward to eating. These days, I always keep tofu on hand. Whether it’s in a stir-fry, a hearty main dish, or even blended into a creamy dessert, it’s become one of my favorite ingredients.
But here’s the thing. If I skip the marinating step, it doesn’t matter what else I do. No matter how much effort I put into cooking it, it just falls flat. The flavor never makes its way inside, and it’s just not the same.
And that got me thinking. We’re not so different.
On our own, we can go through the motions, doing all the right things—but without taking time to be still with God, to sit in His presence, and let His Word truly soak into our hearts, something is missing. Just like tofu needs time to absorb flavor, we need time with Him to be filled, shaped, and transformed from the inside out.
That kind of change doesn’t happen in a rush. It happens when we slow down, open our hearts, and allow His Spirit to work in every area of our lives.
So today, if you haven’t already, take a few quiet moments with Him. Let His truth settle in. Let His presence fill you.
Because, just like that perfectly prepared tofu, we become so much more impactful when we’ve been filled with what truly matters.
“And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” —2 Corinthians 3:18 (NIV)
