The Trees Don’t Fight the Change

I LOVE fall! It’s my favorite time of year. Spring has its charm too, but then comes that blanket of yellow pollen. But fall, now that’s a whole different story.

It’s cool mornings and crisp air. Low humidity (and if you’ve ever lived through a Carolina summer, you know that’s saying something — we call it “the air you can wear”). It’s trees and hillsides glowing like they’re on fire, thick cozy sweaters, bonfires, and hikes through a carpet of color from leaves on the ground. I even love the time change — the early light, and the early nights that invite you to slow down. Don’t hate me for that one.

I was built for this time of year. I find myself marking my life by the memories that happened in the fall.

  • My first date with my husband was a crisp October evening at the county fair in 1983.
  • I landed my first job out of college — the one I absolutely loved — in the fall, and I still remember driving home from the interview through a tunnel of bright, fiery trees.
  • We moved into my dream home in the fall of 2022.
  • And my most important moment of all — I fell in love with Jesus and was baptized in October 1974. I can still remember standing on the church steps afterward, hair still damp, heart overflowing.

As I think about it, maybe that’s what draws me to this season so much — change. Fall is the season when everything around us is shifting, yet somehow it’s all so peaceful, even beautiful.

The trees don’t fight the letting go of their leaves. They don’t cling to what was. They trust the process — that after the letting go will come rest, and after rest will come new life.

And maybe that’s the lesson: God makes change beautiful in His time.

Whether it’s a new beginning, a letting go, or a season of waiting, fall reminds me that He’s still at work — painting new colors in my life, layer by layer.

So if you find yourself in the middle of change, take a walk outside. Look up. Breathe in the crisp air. Let the colors remind you that even in the midst of transition, God is creating something beautiful.

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NIV)
