The Valley Is Not For Nothing

There are a few heavy things weighing on my heart right now. Things I’ve been praying about, thinking about, and honestly, sometimes worrying about more than I should.
Most days, I do pretty well keeping my chin up and trusting God with it all, but every now and then, I can feel myself getting a little discouraged. You know those moments when you’ve prayed about something for so long, and you just wish you could see a little light at the end of the tunnel? I have a feeling I’m not the only one.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I am incredibly thankful for the wonderful blessings God has poured into my life. Sometimes, during my quiet time with Him, I start counting those blessings and realize I simply can’t count that high.
But here’s something I’ve learned. Being thankful for our blessings doesn’t mean we aren’t allowed to struggle with our burdens. Both can exist in the same heart.
A while back, our pastor shared something during a sermon that really stuck with me. I’ve found myself coming back to it lately, especially on the harder days.
He talked about how God can use the different experiences we go through to prepare us for something greater. Sometimes, the very valley we’re walking through today may be preparing us to help someone else navigate a similar valley tomorrow.
Think about that for a minute. The struggles that bring us to our knees may someday become the very things that allow us to sit beside someone else and say, “I understand. I’ve been there. And let me tell you how God helped me through it.” There’s something powerful about encouragement that comes from someone who has actually walked the road.
Our pastor also reminded us that the valley isn’t meant to destroy us. Sometimes it’s where God grows us. That doesn’t mean every hardship comes directly from God or that we have to understand why it happened. But it does mean that nothing we go through is beyond His ability to redeem and use for good.
Another part of his message challenged me even more. He talked about the difference between being a follower and being a disciple.
A follower may be happy to walk along when the road is easy. But a disciple keeps walking even when the road gets rocky, the climb gets steep, and the destination is nowhere in sight.
That one really made me think. It’s easy to trust God when everything is going according to plan. It’s quite another thing to trust Him when we can’t see the plan at all. And yet, isn’t that what faith is all about?
I don’t know what burdens you may be carrying today. Maybe it’s a family situation, a health concern, a broken relationship, or something you’ve been praying about for years. But I want to encourage you with the same reminder that encouraged me. Your valley is not for nothing.
God sees what you’re going through. He hears those prayers you’ve whispered when no one else was listening. Even when you can’t see what He’s doing, you can trust that He hasn’t abandoned you.
As for me, I’ve decided to keep my head up, keep praying, and keep walking forward. I may not understand everything happening around me, but I know the One who walks beside me.
And maybe, just maybe, one day I’ll be able to use what I’ve learned in this valley to help someone else find their way through theirs. Wouldn’t that be something beautiful?
So, if you’re walking through a difficult season, let’s keep walking together. We don’t have to know every turn in the road. We just have to trust the One who does.
“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” — 2 Corinthians 4:17–18 (NIV)
