Some Things Aren’t Meant to Stand Alone: The Vanilla Effect

I use vanilla extract a lot in recipes—desserts, smoothies, even pancakes. It smells so good when you open the bottle that it almost seems like you could drink it. But if you’ve ever tasted it straight… dear mercy. It’s awful. Sharp. Bitter. Nothing like you expect. How can something that smells so sweet taste so bad all by itself? And yet, when it’s mixed with flour, sugar, fruit, or other ingredients, it becomes essential. Suddenly it’s not overpowering—it’s transformative. It brings out the best in everything else.
There’s actually a reason for that. Vanilla extract is highly concentrated. It was never meant to be consumed on its own. Its purpose is to be combined, to work quietly in the background, enhancing what it’s mixed with rather than drawing attention to itself. On its own, it’s too strong. But in the right context, it becomes beautiful.
Life can feel that way sometimes. Certain seasons, experiences, or even parts of our own personalities can feel sharp and unpleasant when we’re facing them alone. Grief, waiting, disappointment, discipline, obedience—none of those taste very good by themselves. We might wonder how something that sounds good or should be good can feel so hard. But God never designed us—or our experiences—to be isolated ingredients.
When we allow our lives to be mixed into His bigger story, those bitter moments begin to serve a purpose. God uses them to deepen our faith, strengthen our character, and bring out flavors in us that couldn’t develop any other way. On their own, they may feel overwhelming. But in His hands, they add richness, depth, and meaning we couldn’t produce by ourselves.
So if you’re in a season that feels a little like tasting vanilla straight from the bottle, take heart. Just because something feels unpleasant right now doesn’t mean it’s wasted. Trust the Master Chef. He knows exactly how—and when—to blend every part of your story into something good.
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28
