A Lighter Day Is Coming

Over the last couple of weeks, I watched the limited documentary series Challenger, and it stirred up memories I hadn’t visited in years. I was in college in January of 1986 when the Challenger exploded, and I can still remember watching it unfold on TV. It’s one of those moments that gets etched into your memory forever.

In the documentary, they showed a lot of footage from the astronauts’ training—especially the moments inside the anti-gravity chambers. The crew was floating, laughing, bumping into one another, trying to figure out how to function without gravity holding them down. We’ve all seen clips like that. Everything suspended, bodies flipping effortlessly through space.

As I watched, my mind wandered somewhere unexpected, though. Heaven.

Not the magical version we sometimes imagine—people floating around like angels on clouds (lol). I don’t think it will be like that at all. What struck me instead was this thought. Scripture tells us that Heaven is going to be a place of living without the gravity of this broken world.

Gravity holds us down physically—but sin, pain, and brokenness hold us down emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. We carry weight every day. Regret. Fear. Loss. Worry. Heartache. Weariness. It presses on us constantly. Sometimes, even trying to consume us. Can you imagine what it will feel like when that weight is finally gone?

One writer put it perfectly: “God is going to make all the sad things untrue.” No more heaviness. No more sorrow clinging to our hearts. No more striving or trying to survive. Heaven will come down, and joy will be whole, complete, and pure. Everything will be made new.

I know it might sound a little strange, but watching those astronauts float freely—unbound by gravity—made me long for the day when we will be unbound by the weight of sin and brokenness once and for all.

So, if this world feels heavy right now, that’s because it is. And it was never meant to be our final home. We’re just passing through. The heaviness we feel is a reminder to loosen our grip on what weighs us down and fix our eyes on the hope ahead. One day, the weight will lift. Until then, we walk in faith, trusting the God who promises that joy really is coming in the morning.

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelation 21:4
