More Than a Quick Bite

There’s something I’ve noticed about myself over the years—I may get up early, but breakfast rarely happens first thing. It usually sneaks in closer to mid-morning, and when the weather is warm, that’s my favorite time to carry a simple meal out to the front porch.

I’ve eaten plenty of meals at my desk while working, but I’ve learned that’s not where I feel most nourished. What I really love is sitting quietly—no TV, no scrolling, no rushing from one thing to the next. Just stillness. A slow meal. Time to actually taste what I’m eating and be present in the moment.

Because if I’m honest, when I eat distracted or on the go, I sometimes can’t even remember what I had, how it tasted, or what I was doing at the time.

And it hit me one day last week. How often do I do the same thing with our spiritual life?

We can open our Bible, read a few verses, say a quick prayer—and then move right along with our day. But if our mind is elsewhere or we’re squeezing it into the margins, we miss so much of it. We don’t fully take it in. We don’t sit with it long enough to let it nourish our hearts.

Just like a rushed meal leaves us unsatisfied, a rushed time with God can leave us spiritually underfed.

But when we slow down, when we sit quietly, free from distractions, and truly focus—something changes. We begin to hear Him more clearly. We notice things we might have rushed past before. We give space for the gentle whispers of the Holy Spirit to guide, comfort, and teach us.

Maybe today is a good day to slow down a little. To savor not just your food—but your time with God.

“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4
