What Are We Throwing Our Peas At?

Just last week, I came across a story I’d never heard before, but it really resonated with me. It was about a man who wanted to impress the king, so he spent years perfecting the skill of tossing a pea through a tiny hole, thinking he would be rewarded handsomely for his skill and entertainment. When he was finally granted the opportunity to show the king his talent, the king smiled and handed him a bag of peas. “You’ve worked hard, but for something that serves no purpose. You are rewarded according to your effort.” The message was simple but powerful—he had spent so much time mastering something that didn’t truly matter.
That story spoke volumes to me. In today’s world, it feels like there are endless “peas” competing for our attention—the internet, social media, video games, TV shows, and countless other distractions. And the truth is, our time on earth has a set number of days—days only God knows. I don’t want to look back and realize I spent too many of mine chasing things that didn’t count for much. Instead, I want to invest my time in what truly matters—nurturing relationships, caring for my health, serving others, and walking closely with God.
Today, maybe we should all take a moment to consider where the pea tricks in our lives are, and how God might be calling us to invest our time, energy, and heart into things of lasting value.
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12
